This week marks a change in our lives, Caspian has reached that final destination, the top ratio he is ever likely to be on. It is 4:1. I hear you ask, what is this ratio? It is his food ratio of 4 grams of fat to every gram of carbohydrate. He essentially consumes about 150 grams of fat a day ( no mean feat) and very little else. It tends to make his food, slimy and oily and very odd. It is miracle food. We have achieved a reduction of his meds from 4 nasties to 2 and weaning of the third. His speech is improving, slowly and he has shown on several occasions that under his tired, wired and drugged little brain he is learning, he knows 5 colours (I had no idea). There are serious draw backs, he has never been more ill than in these 2 1/2 months than he has been this winter. He has been struggling to repair his little body, with manky, festering teeth and hair falling out… but the tooth is gone and the hair will return.
Finally we can begin to build.Build recipes, stockpile cooked meals, order in bulk tonnes of macadamia nuts and pass on recipes to family members (my parents) willing to make meals for our little boy. Most ketogenic families return from hospital on the 4:1 ratio and start to build immediately. This was not Caspian’s style! he exited hospital on 2:1 went to 2.5:1, 3:1,3:25 to 1 and 3.5:1. Each time the ratio changed I adjusted the recipes, lots of standing at the kitchen bench fiddling with the computer and swearing. Lots of rejected meals, many successes ( eventually). So TA DA !we have arrived and it is ok! I’m throwing away my grieving for vegetables and embracing this crazy miracle diet. Wish us luck and lots of inspiration for great fatty food!
