Things have been moving along nicely in the last month or so for Caspian. His seizures have diminished enough for us to continue removing his Topiramate. This miracle diet means dropping his drugs is so much safer and is indeed a possibility at all. The most recent drop has given us cause to dance; language, sweet language. Our little Prince has begun to speak with greater clarity, more fluently and with greater complexity! Woo hoo! He cracked his first joke at about 2 in the morning, which had all of us laughing.
I found a fabulous book by William B. Svoboda. Childhood Epilepsy: Language, Learning and Behavioural complications. This book is worth its weight in gold. I will be purchasing one for Caspian’s Speech Path as she was quite interested. I expect I will be referring to this book again and again through the years. The author discusses the impact of certain drugs on language and for once Caspian actually follows the textbook. Topiramate has a small chance of causing hesitancy with speech and struggles with word finding. Wow! I can’t wait until it is gone. My darling husband oft says “It is so hard to tell the difference between the drugs and the disease (of epilepsy)”. Once the Topiramate is gone Caspian will be down to 2 drugs from 4, 6 months ago. Amazing! If you do buy the book, it comes in a paperback which is naturally significantly cheaper. Christmas may be gone but I still have cause to Celebrate!
